Ninilchek,, AK

7-13-13 --- Ah!!! Parked at Deep Creek with an ocean and mountain view…. tides coming and going certainly teach patience.  So we’ll sit and relax a while…… well maybe a few days at least!Ninilchek, AK 002

Ninilchek, AK 003

Larry & Peggy Leonard SP #1426 invited the Dudley’s and Orrs for dinner at their home in Ninilchek – Delightful, friendly SKPs who love to visit with other SKPs traveling thru the area.  They have lived here in Alaska since 1981.  I’d say they are real Alaskans now!Ninilchek, AK 015

Today we took a beach drive to see the eagles (lots of eagles) and of course the gulls lunching on fish.  They love to feed on the fish carcasses of halibut and salmon.  Okay it’s Lunch Time!Ninilchek, AK 047Ninilchek, AK 031

Then a drive to Old Ninilchek…… a scenic old village Ninilchek, AK 058

Denny is always interested in ‘just how they do that’ – so bringing in the fishing boats with a remodeled ‘lumber tractor’ made for an interesting afternoon of watching…….Ninilchek, AK 069

Me, I think I like the wild flowers better…… Cow parsnip is everywhere and here with a bit of fireweed.Ninilchek, AK 054

Across the Bay–Homer

7-11-13  What a delightful day in Homer.  Yesterday we went across the bay to the Center for Coastal Studies.  A close view of Gull Island – sea birds nesting --- 2013-07-11Homer cont 006

With the huge tide differences – often more than 18’ – they had a small barge to transport us from the dock.  It operates with rope pulleys – so everyone had to walk pulling the rope to get us to the stairs, then re-pull it out for the tide changes.2013-07-11Homer cont 0092013-07-11Homer cont 012The morning was then spent tide pooling at low tide for various sea creatures….. What a perfect day …..2013-07-11 Denny Droid 0252013-07-11Homer cont 0132013-07-11Homer cont 021

We are parked along the bay near the ‘Fishing Hole’ on the Homer Spit – a popular spot for fishing.  Also near by is a table for trimming fish.  The gulls sure do raise a ruckus waiting for their free lunch!
