Brigus, NF 8-10-14

We strolled around town enjoying the many very old and some new homes  A bit of history – Brigus is the 2nd oldest English settlement in Newfoundland -- 1612.  Neighboring Cupids in 1610.  Homes were built along the shores and among the rocks.  Roads are narrow and mostly just one lane in and about town.

 

 

And a wonderful tour of the last house picture --- The woman who shared her home was related to Bob Bartlett – famous sea captain of early 1900’s – in fact he sailed to the North Pole with Adm Byrd and was friends with Pres Teddy Roosevelt.  Many historic pieces were shared.  A delightful visit. 

Brigus NF 8-8-14

Brigus is home of the Blueberry Festival that friends have told us about.  We found parking at the local ball field.  The town is quite old with narrow street/lanes and lots of colorful homes…… some old and resided or painted, others new.  But delightful to drive and enjoy the many sights.  A sampling of Newfoundland homes and views.

And a bit of whimsy……..      

We’ll enjoy music tonight at the “Screech In”  ----- We danced and enjoyed the music.  Met a couple from Whitehorse.  Small world!  We stayed until 12 – and they hadn’t started the “Screech In” – so we went back to the RV.  The Screech-In is a traditional ceremony to make you a Newfoundlander – A bit of funny stuff, kiss the Cod and drink a bit of “Screech” – oh well another time.

Trinity 8-6-14

A full day ahead – Old Bonaventure is the home of “Random Passage” -- a TV series of early life along the sea.  The town was built for the filming and is now a place to visit.  The early homes were built of vertical logs and chinked with moss. 

 

 

 

Of course you know who had to sit on the pot!

The movie “The Grand Seduction” was filmed near by.  So we stopped at “Joe’s Place”

 

We were looking forward to the Trinity Pageant – an out door play whereby the audience strolls along from place to place….. but alas the cloudy skies opened up to rain.  We did see the 1st act.

That evening it was the “Rising Tide” dinner theater for food and entertainment.  Delightful song and humor well performed.

Cod Fishing 8-5-2014

Newfoundlanders are friendly folk.  Denny met some ladies who offered us a Cod Fishing Trip…… so up early at 5am and ready to go…..clear calm waters! 

We had expert teachers with Baxter at the helm and Doug to help us.  It didn’t take long – just a half hour – to et our 15 fish!  What fun!

 

 

 

A great morning start --- Thank you Baxter & Doug!  Now on to Bonavista for touring…………

Demolition Derby–8-3-14

Demolition Derbies are always a hoot!  A sunny day, a dirt pit, and cars to smash…… and a big crowd in Gander, NL  Bring your own chairs – there are no bleachers.  Good Laughs!

Gander, NL 8-2-14

Yesterday we enjoyed a walk at  Cobb’s Park – a boardwalk – walk around the lake ~ 2km thru the woods, marsh with look outs across the pond along the way.                                    

 

This is Gander Festival Week with carnival and various activities. Saturday night was a “Kitchen Party” -  that is a gathering of friends with music and dance.  Parties start late in NL – doors opened at 9p – music started close to 10p for the 1st of 4 groups playing into the wee hours.  First group was “Freshly Squeezed” popular St John’s group, then the “Navigators” we had seen in Twillingate, Abbey Road (played Beatles music), and last a local Gander group – we left mid Abbey Road --- we’re getting old – music was just too LOUD!  Enjoyable if just a bit less volume.
